The Energy Crisis Within: Reigniting Your Mental and Emotional Flame

By Olivia Beardsmore

In today’s world, energy is a word that resonates on multiple levels. The rising cost of energy dominates headlines, while an equally pressing but less visible crisis emerges within us: the mental health crisis. At their core, both crises are deeply tied to energy. Energy sustains us, powers our daily lives, and fuels our inner vitality. Yet, just as the global energy crisis forces us to rethink how we consume power, the increasing strain on mental health challenges us to reconsider how we manage and nurture our personal energy.

As a Master Firewalk Instructor and Experiential Empowerment Coach, I have witnessed how fire offers profound insights into these issues. Fire is both a literal and symbolic representation of energy. It warms, fuels, and illuminates, but it also demands respect and careful tending. When we understand how to work with fire—both the one around us and the one within—we unlock the power to transform our lives.

Are You Protecting Your Flame?

In the same way we are encouraged to monitor energy consumption during price hikes, we should assess how we expend our own mental and emotional energy. Just as installing a smart meter helps us track and conserve household energy, we can cultivate awareness of where our personal energy is being used. Are you:

  • Giving your energy freely to situations or people that drain you?
  • Neglecting time to recharge and prioritise your own well-being?
  • Allowing self-doubt or negative self-talk to deplete your reserves?

A smart meter empowers us to make better decisions by showing us where energy is being wasted. Similarly, taking the time to reflect on how you spend your mental and emotional energy can illuminate areas where you might be overextending yourself. Your inner energy is a finite resource, just like electricity or fuel. Every action, interaction, and thought either replenishes or diminishes your reserves. If you don’t take steps to conserve and renew your energy, you risk burnout—a state all too familiar in today’s fast-paced and demanding world. As the saying goes, “You can’t pour from an empty cup.” The same applies to your inner flame: you cannot burn brightly if it is not carefully tended.

Rekindling Your Inner Energy

To preserve and strengthen your inner flame, discover what fuels it. Consider these questions:

Who or what inspires and uplifts you?

What activities help you feel energised?

Are you creating space for rest, reflection, and growth?

Fire requires three essential elements: fuel, oxygen, and a spark. Similarly, your energy relies on a balanced combination of nourishment, rest, and inspiration. When you address all three, your flame can burn steadily and brightly, even in challenging circumstances.

Lessons from the Firewalk

Walking barefoot across glowing embers may seem impossible, yet it is a powerful metaphor for life and energy management. The firewalk teaches us resilience, focus, and courage. It demonstrates that by channelling our inner energy and trusting our capabilities, we can overcome challenges that once seemed insurmountable.

The firewalk is not just about the immediate triumph of crossing embers; it’s a life lesson. It reminds us to tend our inner flames, respect our limits, and cultivate purpose and passion. When we walk through fire, we connect with a primal force that empowers us to sustain our energy and thrive.

Reignite Your Flame

While the energy crisis may be beyond our control, our personal energy is something we can master. By consciously fuelling and protecting your inner flame, you can navigate life’s challenges with strength and clarity.
