For the last 23 years I have been putting off living my passion.
To become a DJ.
For those 23-24 years, I lived a dream of becoming a DJ (in my head), pretending and twirling around in my bedroom with my colour lights on most of the time. I thought that DJing was beyond me, that you had to be someone special with a lot of money for equipment. Little did I know that it is totally possible to do this. But, I was scared.
I knew I needed to learn it, but instead, I just sat and thought about it incessantly. I thought about it that much, I was too tired to action it, and at every hurdle, I procrastinated.
I told myself…
- The equipment was expensive
- The tech was too hard
- I will have to be a roadie and learn the ropes (spending weekends and evenings away from my family)
- There are too many DJs and I am too late to the party
Then I found out I could DJ directly from my laptop…
But… I told myself that the tech was still too hard to learn and that I couldn’t possibly do it because I had lost all my music a few years earlier. This added another 1-2 years to my journey.
So, what happened? Why am I playing today?
I decided to start walking my talk and do what I have always taught my clients to do by listening to their body’s aches, pains and stresses to achieve their goals.
Because whatever stress occurs in the body is happening in real life.
Many people will say go big or go home. However, for a lot of my clients, the reality is overthinking and sweating the big stuff (because the steps are too far ahead to reach). Therefore, they are actually in the way of achieving the dream goal that is aligned for them. Hence, most people will give up or keep overthinking what they want to do without actually doing it.
Sound familiar?
Let’s start small… by starting small you allow your brain to take those easier baby steps forward. The steps that get you to your goal faster.
For many of you, this could start with meeting your basic needs, such as sleep, going for a walk in the fresh air or even letting go of a distraction.
For me, I had to quit social media to make it happen. It was a massive distraction for me. My step felt right and it also felt big too hence why there were smaller steps before I could fully disconnect (handing my socials to a VA, creating a repetitive schedule on repeating, and scheduling blogs in advance) until the day came to switch it off. I knew I was ready and felt that giving up a lot of social media (or limiting its usage massively) would allow me to take the steps towards DJing.
It bloody did too!
With a lot of tears… I let go of a lot of social media.
Here’s what small steps (and process) looked like after for me…
Firstly, I learned to stay present while connecting to my future self (through health and lifestyle activations and body healing coaching).
Through these, I used my senses to see and feel myself taking the smaller steps, such as…
- Create Spotify playlists (with Spotify you can mix them like a DJ set)
Then my next steps looked like this…
- Open the downloaded software (Virtual DJ) on your laptop and look at it…
- Find a music downloading subscription (don’t subscribe)
Then…
- Delete Virtual DJ software and download Rekordbox software as it is aligned to the equipment I wanted (equipment for playing in clubs)
Of course, procrastination set in along this path, so I closed the laptop and slept on it for a few days, before…
- Subscribing to a site for downloading music
- Learning to mix music within a few days
- Finding equipment for £280 as a start-up kit
- Bought equipment
- Played equipment
- Started telling people I DJ’d
- Got my first paid gig
Basically, it took 1 week to learn it – not inside out, but I can put songs together, catch the beat and switch between songs.
You see, even I can be sitting on something for YEARS, thinking, dreaming, plotting and planning without even starting.
However, breaking through those recurring, thoughts, and patterns that hold us back has us moving forward doing (and reaching) goals we only ever dreamed of.
Are you sitting on a dream goal? Maybe you are a stressed-out leader who is looking to quickly get moving forward in your career, relationship or beyond.
If this is you, then I invite you to either check out my quick and simple Health and Lifestyle Activation or seminar. However, if you feel like you have tried everything and the same patterns keep repeating, then I invite you to a discovery call where we discuss an in-person Intuitive Strategy Day.
