Many leaders burn the candle at both ends.
Are there moments when you miss the signs? When everything is amazing, you are really going for gold, but you are also not sleeping at night, drinking water or even eating properly.
8 years ago, I never really listened to the fact that my body was exhausted and would become extremely ill because of it. Being athletically fit doesn’t always mean being healthy.
You see, when you lean into exhaustion you are allowing your body to just stop and you are giving your body permission to become ill (if your immune system is low enough).
How many times have you taken a holiday (or had family time) and your body has had other ideas?
That is because you have been running at 100mph in 3rd gear for a long time, and you have had ZERO time for illness, ZERO time to cough or even sneeze let alone have a fever. So, when you take that break… you become ill.
This is what has happened to me.
I knew just before I broke up (and my period finished) that I was f@cked. I should have said NO to going to an impromptu Black Tie Business Event (90 minutes before it started) and then NO to the second oldest Business Club in the UK the next day (again, impromptu). But, this was an opportunity that I did not want to pass up. However, I knew I was ready for rest and had readily booked a 2 night solo break starting just after the Business Club (on the Friday).
However, as part of my growth… I said YES.
Both events were f@cking amazing AND completely out of my comfort zone. I spoke freely as myself and by the end of the second event I was done with speaking to people. By the end, my head was pounding, my eyes were hurting and I just needed to get to the hotel (just down the road) for my 2 night date by myself.
Boy, did I sleep!
I won’t bore you with my hotel stay, because this blog is not about that. What I will say, is that I slept, was silent (most of the time) and spent time exploring (on foot) the Nottingham area.
By the time, I arrived home Sunday afternoon, I felt a ‘tingling’ in my throat. This is a BIG indicator of something dropping in. So, I did some sound healing and thought no more of it. Monday…
I was like death warmed up, my throat like razor blades and a low grade fever.
To be honest… while I was a little upset, I was happy that because this moment directed me to sorting out the stuff that I had been putting off… following up and updating my website while remaining silent and from my bedside before I switched off and leaned into this feeling of exhaustion even more.
I see leaning into exhaustion as the ‘gateway’ to getting your physical energy and well-being back. This is the moment where you are really giving yourself permission to be with your body. You are not ignoring it for any bigger ordeals in life. This is the moment you are listening. You may get a cold or a fever as your body is no longer functioning in a state of flux, and leaves your body open to low grade illness.
This is known as ‘The Let Down Effect’ in some medical circles.
This is exactly where I was as I typed this. Within the thick of the ‘let down effect’. I can see why my body dipped, while I booked time out AND scheduled in a bigger break away from my business… I was driving my car at 100mph in 3rd with so many responsibilities and step ups within my work as a Nottingham healer too.
However, rather than getting back into the thick of it. I am being with me, clearing my diary and taking some time away from social media, delegating more responsibilities in my life and business and getting back to nature on the allotment for a little while.
Hence, as a Nottingham healer and spiritual counsellor, I parked my physical car, leaned into my own relaxation technique (watch the 3 step process here) and took later bookings for a more steady ride.
